Energy Monitor Loan Scheme

GEAG has a number of energy monitors, provided by South Cambridgeshire Council, which are available for loan free of charge to parish residents. These are extremely useful little devices that allow you to see how much electricity you are using in your home and how much you are spending on power. As well as helping you to cut back on your energy usage, they can really help you to save money!

We normally loan out the monitors for about a month, which is plenty of time for you to get an idea of how much energy you are using and how you can make savings. The monitors take up very little space and can be installed in a few minutes without any special equipment. If you decide to borrow one, a GEAG member will call round and install it, and will also ask you to fill out a short questionnaire on your energy usage. The whole process takes less than an hour of your time.

Energy Monitors: Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will installing the monitor cause any permanent damage?
A. No. The monitors simply clip on to a cable leading to your electricity meter, and when you return them they simply unclip. There is no permanent installation and no damage.

Q. How soon can I have a monitor installed?
A. The monitors are installed by GEAG members who are all volunteers. There is thus a short wait while we locate a volunteer close to you. Normally, however, we hope to install your monitor within a week or so of your request.

Q. I've borrowed a monitor from GEAG and found it really helped me to lower my electricity bill. Can I keep it?
A. Sorry! We do need to make sure that others benefit from seeing their energy usage too. But there are ways you can get your own monitor. Some energy companies will give you a free monitor if you sign up for a green tariff. Or you can buy one from many electrical stores or online (from Amazon, for example). They start at around £25 for a basic model. The type we are using is called a Minim and it is made by the Cambridge-based companny Humm. You can visit their website for more information.

Energy Monitors: What people said...

"Really easy to set up and use. Thank you!"

"The cost monitor’s results didn’t really surprise me but the visual impact certainly impressed the kids. For the first time they’ve realised that running all the computers and household lights uses an awful lot of electricity."

"I had no idea the tumble dryer was costing me so much! From now on, I'll use the line a lot more often."
